Week 3 - Improvement

Ok, I made it through a week of P90X without an injury. Well, I thought that on week 1 too and didn't feel my injury until Monday morning, so maybe I shouldn't count my chickens before they are hatched. The good news is that the second time through the DVDs was much easier than the first. I am still sore, but not nearly as bad as the first week. I am doing one more week of the same 6 work-outs, and then I'll add more strength exercises starting next week.
My goal is to be able to do 1 pull up by the end of the program because I am not even close right now. I have to stand on a chair and kind of pull myself up, but it's really hard to do that without cheating by just straightening your legs.
My food choices were not that great again this week. I had to travel again, and I have decided that it is impossible for me to eat out for 2 days straight without getting french fries. And, I saw the bartender making a drink with Peach Firefly at about 2pm, so I had to have a drink because I can't pass up that stuff! This coming week will coming will be a challenge to keep up because the family is coming in for the holiday. We'll see if I get any exercise in over the weekend or not.

So I'm not sure what is more all over the place, the scale or my weight. I'm going to go scale because it makes me feel better.

Week 2 - Injury

So this week was not off to a good start. I tried to do my core muscles workout on Monday morning, and it felt like I had a torn muscle in my lower stomach. I thought maybe if I switch to one of the cardio workouts instead it wouldn't hurt as bad, but no such luck. I have no idea when I pulled it because it didn't bother me all weekend, but it got to the point where it was really painful to even sit up in bed. So that being said, it was not a great week for P90X.
I tried running and that didn't bother my stomach muscles, so I was able to get 3 miles in on Monday through Thursday. I didn't get in any workouts over the weekend, but I posted a picture to prove that I wasn't just laying around. Joe and I decided to cut down some trees in our yard, so I spent two days lugging around logs. We were successful in our first attempt with a chainsaw judged by the fact that there were no injuries.
I still haven't seen any weight loss based on my first reading, but I still think that was too low. I'm traveling for work to beautiful Albany, Georgia (I know, I've never heard of it either) this week so hopefully I'm able to figure out how to get my workouts in.

Week 1 - Torture

I didn't know that it was possible to have every muscle in your body hurt at the same time. I have only done 6 of the 12 DVDs and I'm doing the more cardio based program, but I'm pretty sure I've already hit every muscle in my body. My schedule consisted of : Monday - Core Exercises, Tuesday - Arms & Shoulders, Wednesday - Cardio, Thursday - Yoga, Friday - Legs & Back, and Saturday - Kempo (It is basically kickboxing, but Joe says that I have to call it Kempo because he did it with me and Kempo sounds "tougher" than kickboxing).
I've enjoyed it all so far because it is something new, but yoga was 90 minutes, and I was getting antsy knowing how long I had to commit. One of the neat things about the DVDs is that they have a countdown for each exercise, so you know how how long you have to go. I definitely have a ways to go because I can't keep up right now, especially on the abs. And during the legs and back workout they probably did over 100 pull ups...which is a problem since I can't even do one! My goal is to be able to do one full pull up by the end of the program.
So my diet did not go as well as my exercising this week. I think I ate more fried food this week than I have since the beginning of the year. It started with a last minute trip to Savannah for work during a rainstorm. The only place nearby for dinner once I arrived was a Five Guys Burgers, so dinner consisted of a cheeseburger and fries. Then I forgot my power cord for my computer, so I couldn't get my workout in that morning. So the next day I had to drive home and wasn't passing anything but fast food on the highway so I decided to get a grilled chicken sandwich...only to find out when I opened the bag that they gave me a big mac. I have made it 28 years without every eating a big mac and I had no intention of ever changing that. We went to our annual St Patties Day party yesterday, so I drank plenty of beer and got 4th meal at midnight (but I decided it doesn't count as 4th meal because I never ate dinner)! The only thing I know to do after a night of drinking is to eat a fast food breakfast and a Philly cheese steak and fries for lunch. So, needless to say, hopefully next week will bring better eating habits!

I think I'm going to have to start weighing myself on Mondays for more consistency. I was a little skeptical about my weight last week because I thought the weight was too low, and I'm hoping that my results from this week confirm that. I also wonder how accurate our home scale is going to be, or if I am going to have large variances every week.

Pre-game Photo Shoot

Wow, those are some unflattering pictures. I can't believe I'm throwing this out there for the world to see. I think there is a reason that spandex went out in the 80s, and for majority of the population they shouldn't be back in style now. I figured that the more embarrassing the photo, the more motivation I would have to get in better shape. Wish me luck as I start my routine at 6am tomorrow morning!

I bought a new scale to measure body fat, but it is only accurate if you take it at a point where you are equally hydrated each time. Since I chose Sunday as my weigh in day we'll have to see how this goes because I'm typically dehydrated after going out on Saturday night.

My Next Exercise Journey

I have learned over the past few years that if I do not have a goal that I am training for, exercise is not a priority in my life. When I was training for my half marathons and triathlons, exercise was a priority because I knew I would pay come race day if I didn't train. Well now that I don't have any races scheduled for this year, it means that I don't have the motivation to work out.

So, that being said, I am attempting a new program called P90X that consists of 12 DVDs that are a mix of cardio, yoga, and lifting. I'm hoping that since there is a set schedule to follow it will motivate me. There is also a nutrition program, but I'm not sure I'm dedicated enough to include that as well. We'll see how this all goes, and maybe I'll add the nutrition for my second go around.

I was also told in my MBA program that I am supposed to spend 15 minutes per day writing about any topic I want because it improves your writing skills. I'm thinking 15 minutes per week is a step in the right direction.

My thought is to do this "Biggest Loser" style, and post pictures each week showing my progress. Come on along for the ride, and maybe this will be motivation for other people struggling with motivation too.
